Public Service Projects. The Bokashi Center/Kahalu'u Country Store sponsors public service projects. This is mainly to support our environment, Hawai'i's native plants and animals, and our culture as much as possible using a 100% natural eco-friendly technology known as "EM" (effective microorganisms) Technology. EMT is based upon EM·1®, an OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) listed product, which is what we use to make all our products.

FAQs
The Bokashi Center uses EM·1® in all its products. EM·1® is a certified microbial solution as formulated by Dr. Teruo Higa, the inventor of EM (Effective Microorganisms) Technology. We recommend only using EM products based upon EM·1® for intended and true results.
Only the label. Both use the same ingredients, including EM·1®.
Good question. Choose carefully such as bokashi or Doo-Right™ made by the Bokashi Center/Kahalu'u Country Store. We use the original EM·1® as formulated by Dr. Teruo Higa (the inventor of EM). Be wary of any thing else that makes wild claims, and lacks research and laboratory grade facilities to manufacture pure, quantifiable EM.
Avoid drought or floods, replenish with organic material such as mulch/compost.
Active Ingredients: Microorganisms... 1 million colony forming units/cc (units/ml) Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus planarum, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Bacillus subtilis, Rhodopseudomonas palustris, Saccharomyces cervisiae.
Uses: The beneficial microorganisms in EM·1® combine with microbes that are already present in the environment to promote rapid multiplication of beneficial microorganisms which foster health soils and optimal growing conditions for plants.
"Organic Materials Review Institute Listed"
Bokashi provides an anchor and visual indication of area extent of EM innoculation. It is also very economic and easier to apply as its weight is less than liquid. It also contains organic matter providing antioxidants and nutrients for the EM and soil, which in turn are beneficially taken up by plants or animals. Bokashi's scope and extent of use is endless.
EM-A is a liquid also known as activated EM or extended EM. It is made by the user by brewing the stock EM·1® solution, at a high dilution rate, with molasses and water. It is an economic method, albeit heavy, for applying EM. Typically it is used as a foliar at even higher dilutions and/or as a ground soak.
EM·1® is the original stock solution used in making bokashi, EM-A and other EM products - it can be used directly, however, the cost is considerably high considering the alternatives of brewing the EM culture as found in bokashi and EM-A. However, it is not recommended to make additional EM by way of EM-A as the microbe proportions cannot be guaranteed.
Plants
EM-A or EM·1® can be diluted with water at 1:100 (EM:water) as a soil soak. Foliar applications can go to 1:500. Once per week would suffice. Once per month for minimum maintenance.
Bokashi can be spread at 1#/100 sq. feet. Once every two or three weeks would suffice. Once per month for minimum maintenance.
Livestock (probiotic and odor reduction)
EM-A or EM·1® - Daily at same dilution as for plants above.
Bokashi - Daily at about 5% of total food weight.
The Bokashi Center, LLC makes no claims or warranties as to the effectiveness of its products and/or impacts of its FAQs.

The Bokashi Center is also an authorized dealer of EM·1® and related EM products.

Probiotic!
The EM-1 is versatile. I also
use it as a probiotic - using about a tablespoon mixed with a cup of filtered
water. I would tend to use neutral, 7.0 pH water, to avoid killing the
good microbes. The theory is that the three groups of microbes - photosynthetic
bacteria, lactic bacteria and yeasts - work together to produce useful
substances from organic (inc. waste) matter. These substances are largely
antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins that are good for the body. They also
tend to direct the other microbes towards regeneration and effect beneficial
magnetic resonances. In a pinch I would just use the EM-1 together with
water.
My preferred method is to extend the solution by fermenting it with molasses
and water for about a week in an air tight container: http://picasaweb.google.com/bokashicenter/ActivatingEM/photo#5144694936583214130 (also
click on arrows there to see more photos).
The ratios are 1 part EM-1, 1 part molasses, 100 parts water. These are mixed
together and kept in an airtight container at room temperature for about
a week. Bubbles will appear and this is CO2. By fermenting the solution in
a container, the microbe count goes up and their byproducts (above antioxidants,
etc.) are more readily made available. The drink also has a nice carbonated
texture to it. This extension and fermentation results in what is called "Activated
EM" or EM-A. Cost is dramatically lowered by this extension.
No medical claim is being made here. I do however report that I have a nice regulated digestion process and feel energized, which I attribute to the daily consumption of EM-1 or EM-A. I also believe that it is effective against tooth decay and bad breath. Ask your SO.
